56,000 pounds of litter has been removed from the environment on Nantucket Island in just three events.
Our teams have removed a staggering 28 tons of litter from Nantucket's fragile environment. The mission of this annual grassroots event is to encourage community participation to address Nantucket’s litter as the population grows.
We aim to raise awareness and to cultivate teamwork, friendly competition, and a shared responsibility in keeping the Island’s roadsides, beaches and wild places litter free.

Third annual Nantucket Litter Derby-Watch our 2022 recap
"This whole Nantucket Litter Derby event is amazing. $1000 to the team that picks up the most trash. This adorable team didn’t win, but they did fill my truck, with a 6 foot bed, with trash…twice! That’s a lot of trash! It’s incredible how beautiful the island looks today. This event and these kids really made a difference. Thank you Emmae and friends!"
C. Oberg, Nantucket, 2022 Derby
"We will definitely be participating again next year. Not only did we make a difference on our small island, but I was given a different gift maybe one that was not intended. I was given the gift of having my 15-year-old by my side for two days. We talked, we laughed, and she could see that the work she was doing mattered. Plus, I was able to connect with a teenager during a time in her life when many are pushing their parents away. The trash we picked up and the feeling of accomplishment was amazing, but the time I spent laughing and chatting with my teen, I will remember forever. Thank you for organizing this event, thank you for caring about our island!"
-H. Fee, Nantucket, 2022 Derby
"Whether by foot, paw, bike, or car...we hope you got out to enjoy this gorgeous spring Sunday. Special thanks to all the amazing people who pitched in and picked up for the Nantucket Litter Derby. We are so grateful to see so many islanders out with bags and full truck beds to help give the island a good spring cleaning!"
